Sangeet Samellan in Southall<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

On 22 November 2014<\/strong> a special Sangeet Evening was hosted by Namdhari Sikh Sangat Southall to celebrate the life of His Holiness Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji. This was to mark Satguru Ji’s Parkash\u00a0 Diwas. The Sangeet samellan was personally blessed by Sri Satguru Uday Singh Ji.\u00a0 Sri Satguru Ji congratulated Ustad Kiranpal Singh for organising this samellan and\u00a0 wished it a grand success.\u00a0 It was encompassed within the regular Saturday evening Naam-simran program.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sangat was at a privilege to witness this epic experience with some searing sarangi and santoor solos from the exceptional Ustads Surjeet Singh and Ustad Kiran Pal Singh respectively. Completing the line-up and as always a special honour to have, was award winner Ustad Harbhajan Singh with his regular companion Ustad Gurdev Singh.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stage secretary Gurkartar Kaur introduced the evening’s layout and artists. The sarangi solo was the opening item. Accompanying Ustad Surjeet Singh was\u00a0 Harkirat Singh on tabla and Amandeep Kaur on the tanpura.\u00a0 Surjeet Singh’s (disciple of Pandit Ram Naryan) offering was Raag Bihag<\/strong> – a Hindustani classical raga. Bihag is played in the night. The mood of the raag is celebratory as well as romantic, making it a common raag sung especially on celebratory occasions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sounds of the santoor followed next. Ustad Kiran Pal Singh (disciple of Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma), with Harkiret Singh Bahra mesmerised the audience with Raag Yamaan<\/strong>. A night raag, Yaman is regarded one of the grandest and most fundamental ragas in Hindustani music. Both instrumentalists exhibited professionalism in their performances, weaving through the intrinsic patterns of the raags with relative ease.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ustad Harbhajan Singh generously treated the sangat to proportions of Gurbani compositions of Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji. He was ably accompanied by sarod vadak Ustad Gurdev Singh on the Tar shehnai . Youngsters Uday Singh (dilruba) and Gushmir Singh (backing vocalist) blended seamlessly with the main artists. The tabla accompaniments were Narinderpal Singh and Sarabit Singh. Both the Ustads shared with the captive audience their intimate involvement with Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji and his endless love and devotion to Gurbani & Music. Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji’s amazing knowledge of hundreds of traditional and rare compositions led to the fusion and creation of\u00a0 new Gurbani compositions in various raags and taals. The hypnotic compositions performed by the jatha included Bijuliyaan chamkan<\/strong> (raag Malkus) and Pal Samooha Sarvar<\/strong> (raag Bhopali).<\/span><\/p>\n

The evening concluded with the newly appointed Suba Kuldeep Singh Chana and Sant Kuldeep Singh Ryatt honouring, on behalf of the Namdhari Sangat Southall, all the performers with tokens of appreciation.<\/span><\/p>\n
